Cake Creations: Three-Color Reduction Prints
First Grade Art, 2006

First grade art students in Illia Mazurek's classes used Styrofoam to create three-color reduction prints. The Styrofoam printing plate was drawn on and printed three times, using three different colors. Each time the printing plate was drawn on, more of the plate was “taken away” or “reduced”, thus revealing the previous color. Everyone used yellow for the first color and then had a choice of colors for the second and third printing steps.

Because this printing project started at a time of year when tasty treats are plentiful (November through December), they looked to the shapes and forms of cakes and ice cream desserts. In addition they looked at the prints of Andy Warhol from his limited-edition cookbook, Wild Raspberries. Warhol illustrated unusual recipes with fanciful images. The students were given the choice of designing a truly yummy creation or combining more unusual ingredients, which in some cases took on creature-like qualities.
