Hands Around the World
Once again, students in N/K and Lower School classrooms are making “Hands Around the World." These paper “hands” will decorate Blaine Lobby as a colorful, creative reminder during this holiday season that we are all one community. This year, as part of the Hands project, students are collecting new mittens and gloves to help those in need. Collection baskets are in Blaine Lobby.
Midwest Workers Toy Drive Underway
Please donate your new or “like new” toys for the children of the Midwest Workers Association. There is a special need for items that would appeal to teenagers. Boxes are in Blaine Lobby and the Woodlawn Nursery Office.
How Do You Know if Your Child is too Sick to Come to School?
As a close community, we strive to be respectful of each other's health. So we offer the following as definite indications that a student should not attend school:
>A morning oral temperature of 99°F or higher. Children should be fever-free without the aid of Tylenol or Motrin for 24 hours before they return to school
>Red eyes with discharge and/or crusting on lashes and burning pain
>Obvious signs that your child cannot comfortably participate in class activities even if there is no fever
>Diarrhea during the past 24 hours
If your child was not well the previous night and/or was uncharacteristically lacking in energy and enthusiasm, do a morning assessment before you commit to a day of school. Kids convinced they can get through the day often give out by midmorning. Remember that the pace here is busy, and kids must cope with recess as well as a variety of classroom activities.
Children who become ill in school will be sent home. We're sympathetic with the difficulties of picking up an ill child and will try to be flexible. Nurse Martha Baggetto can be reached at 773-702-9452.

Message from the Principal
With the arrival of December, I am reminded about how busy the school calendar is for our students and their families. We have had band, choir, and orchestra concerts; assemblies; the fall play; conference days; field trips; and a High School informational meeting for eighth graders. We made the transition from fall to winter season sports, and of course, we celebrated Thanksgiving.

February Conference Reminder and Correction
There was an error on the printed calendar indicating two days set aside for conferences in February. We will have one day for these conferences, and it is Friday, February 8. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused.
Fifth Grade Fine Arts Note Cards
Continuing this exciting tradition for the eleventh year, the Laboratory Schools' own unique note cards are available for purchase. They feature work completed last spring by Philip Matsikas' fifth grade Fine Arts students (current sixth graders). Each student chose a work of art and interpreted it—in miniature—as an original watercolor painting.
Sets of the professionally printed cards are available for $25 per assorted set of twelve with envelopes; for every four sets purchased, a fifth free set is included. For families of the student artists, each set contains two of your child's work, and custom options are available to those who have purchased $100 in assorted sets. All profits from sales of these cards benefit the Laboratory Schools. See all 114 cards and download the order form.

Safety of High School Students
In light of the tragic events of last Monday, High School students took time during their lunch period to hear about the various measures in place here at Lab and in the Hyde Park area to ensure their safety. When traveling outside of school students were encouraged to move in groups, to be aware of their surroundings, to avoid wearing headphones or talking on a cell phone. If a student feels unsafe, he or she should use one of the many University emergency call boxes throughout Hyde Park. Additionally the University of Chicago Police phone number (773-702-8181) was provided to students, and students were encouraged to program it into their cell phones.
People of Color Conference Attendees
This week six High School students and three High School faculty members left for Boston to attend the People of Color Conference. Students who attend this conference will plan FlavaFest, a school-wide diversity day that occurs during the winter quarter.
End of Quarter Testing Schedule
With the final two weeks of the first quarter approaching, the High School testing schedule will be in place. This schedule is meant to help students as they balance the various major assignments due at this time. The daily bulletin will list the schedule each week and faculty will work to ensure that the workload is manageable for students. Grades will be sent home the week of December 17.
PSAT Scores
PSAT scores for tenth- and eleventh-grade students should arrive in the next two weeks. Tenth-grade students will receive their scores from a class counselor during the advisory period. Counselors will review the scores with them and ensure that students understand how to interpret their scores. Eleventh-grade students will receive their scores from their college counselors during a Thursday double lunch. If the scores do not arrive in time, they will be distributed in January when students return from winter break.

Support Lab through Philanthropy
Like most independent schools, tuition covers only a part of the cost to educate a student at Lab. The school hopes that all families will participate in our culture of giving—it is vital if Lab is to continue educating future thinkers, educators, and opinion-leaders. The fall annual fund appeal is underway, and the mailing should be at your home in the next weeks. Your participation at any level makes a difference.
Make an online gift via the university's secure website or call the Development Office, 773-702-0578.
