Lab selected for Chicago Conservation Clubs program
Lab has been chosen by the Chicago Department of Environment as one of 44 schools in the city to be accepted into the Chicago Conservation Clubs (C3) program. C3 offers an opportunity for students and teachers to become environmental leaders in their schools.

Connections Committee kick-off meeting, October 2
Planning for Connections 2008 is underway. Connections is Lab's most significant fundraising event of the year, organized by a team of more than 40 parent volunteers in partnership with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations Office. While the event is months away, there are a number of ways you can be involved today. The first Connections Committee meeting is scheduled for 8:45am, Tuesday, October 2 at Evonne and Stuart Taylor's home, 4900 South Woodlawn. Joining the committee is a great way to learn more about Lab, raise funds for priority initiatives, and meet other parents. During the first month of school, all divisions schedule Parent Nights as a means of providing parents with information about our overall program. This includes schedules and routines, curricular goals and expectations, special projects, field trips—all the things that go into creating an engaging school experience for all children.

Learning & Counseling Services

Our Department of Learning & Counseling Services offers several groups throughout the school year to support and assist children and families. Two are resuming in the next few weeks. The Adoptive Parents Discussion group will meet on Friday, September 28th from 8:45-10 am in Blaine 403. This group meets monthly and focuses on discussion of issues important to adoptive families. This first meeting will include discussion of the book, The Mistress’s Daughter: A Memoir by A.M. Homes. Everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t read the book. Banana Splits is a group for children whose parents are not living together. Using games, activities, and friendship, Banana Splits meet during the school day and offer a warm and supportive environment in which children can discuss their experiences and concerns. Groups are offered for grades K-4. Sign-up for Middle School winter sports

Students interested in a winter sport must register this week by signing their name to the roster outside Mr. Ribbens' office. All teams are open to 7th and 8th graders. Sixth graders may join the track team in the spring. Lab offers the following sports for Middle School:

Music Department to host Recital Night October 18

The purpose of the evening is to provide a showcase for students who are pursuing classical music study in voice, winds, strings, and piano. This event is for advanced music students in grades 7-12. Students may perform a solo work, or chamber music. Information and application forms are available from Ms. Sinclair or Mr. Brickner.

Cast and crew selected for Middle School play

The cast and crew lists for the Middle School fall play, "The Hobbit", are posted outside Blaine 214. The first cast and crew rehearsals for the play began this week.

Student applications for the People of Color Conference due October 6

Sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools, the event will be held in Boston, November 28-December 1. U-High will send six students and several faculty to the conference where they will participate with students from independent schools around the country in discussions and workshops about diversity. Previous U-High participants have come back to Lab and led diversity initiatives, including the development of FlavaFest. more

Parent Night (Open House)

U-High’s Parent Night (Open House) will begin at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, October 2 with a reception in the cafeteria. Student schedules will be available there for parents. Ten-minute class visits start at 7 pm. For more details, see the letter from Principal Horvat.

Board Chair & Director address parents at PA Meeting

For the first Parents’ Association meeting of this school year, PA President Dick Mintel has invited Board Chair David Strauss and Director David Magill to address issues of governance and the year ahead. Come to the Monday evening, October 8 meeting starting at 7 pm in Judd 126.

Participate in the International Walk to School Day

Wednesday, October 3 add a little exercise to your commute by parking farther away and walking into school—or take a lap on the Midway in recognition of the need for safe walking routes and increased physical activity needs for children.

Medical Center and Physical Sciences Division families at Lab

Parents associated with the UCMC and PSD are invited for a special reception October 20 at the Smart Museum with comments by Dean James Madara and Lab Director David Magill on the impact of the Medical Center and Physical Sciences Division families on Lab's student community and philanthropic participation. A committee of parents hosts the event. Additional information here.

Applications for Nursery School admission due Oct. 15

Applications for Nursery School 2008-2009 are due to the Office of Admission by Monday, October 15. Applications for K-11 are due December 31. Applications for grade 9 are available now and for all other grades will be available beginning October 15. If you have not already done so, please submit an on-line inquiry form to receive an application packet. Students enrolled at Lab for the 2007-2008 school year do not need to reapply.
