Sutherland Awards: Students as Real World Literary and Art Critics
A favorite Lab activity that lets our academic approach shine is the annual Sutherland Award for Excellence in Children’s Literature. Created and funded in honor of Zena Sutherland (a former University of Chicago faculty member and still considered among the world's most influential scholars of young people's literature), the award is one of the few kid-selected book awards in the United States.

The major dates for next school year are on the 2008-2009 Planning Calendar. However, if your children are in Middle School or High School sports, the fall sports start before the school year: MS cross country, boys soccer, and girls volleyball begin practice on September 2; HS sports begin August 13. See the details on the Laboratory Schools' Athletics web site.

Join Lab at Y-Me "Race to Empower," Sunday, May 11 at 8 a.m.

Join the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools team in the “Race to Empower," a 1- or 3-mile walk or 5K run sponsored by the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization. Last year over 120 Lab faculty, students, and family members participated, raising over $48,000! Everyone on the team receives a race day T-shirt. Register online. Encourage family and friends to participate and/or donate to support breast cancer research. For further information, contact Dee Beaton at 815-534-5106 or Lisa Neimark–Heyman at 312-286-3400.

Nursery/Kindergarten Parent/Teacher Conferences

Nursery/Kindergarten parent/teacher conference days are Friday, May 9 and May 16. Sign up for a specific conference time with your child’s teacher. There is no school for Nursery and Kindergarten children on those days. Grades 1–4 will have school as usual.

Car Line Etiquette

As the weather warms up, it is tempting to let children get out of the car to play wherever you are in the car line. As a courtesy to others, please remember to keep moving forward when you are in the car line to prevent delays and an unnecessarily long wait.

Parent-to-Parent Meetings

Parent-to-parent meetings will take place on May 1 for parents of seventh and eighth graders and May 8 for parents of fifth and sixth graders. Both meetings will be held in Judd 126 from 7-8:30 p.m. This initiative involves parents coming together to discuss issues related to adolescent development and parenting. Evelina Pereira-Webber, a child and adolescent psychotherapist who worked in private practice with adolescents for over fifteen years and has led previous parent-to-parent meetings, will facilitate the meetings. We hope you are able to attend.

Middle School Trips Build Community, Leadership

Over the next few weeks, many of our Middle School students will be participating in a grade level camp. In conjunction with our philosophical belief in hands-on and experiential learning, students in grades 6–8 participate in a series of annual overnight trips. These trips are designed to build and strengthen friendships, develop leadership skills, and make appropriate connections to our curriculum. They extend the learning environment beyond classroom walls and give students the opportunity to work with friends and faculty in a different setting. Camps are held at the following locations:

Sixth grade—5 days in Burlington, WI
Seventh grade—4 days in Pretty Lake, MI
Eighth grade—4 days in Washington, DC

Eighth-grade Trip to Washington, DC

To learn more about our trip and our relationship with Educational Tours, you are invited to join your child for a meeting on Friday, May 9 at 8:15 a.m. in Max Palevsky Theater of Ida Noyes Hall. The meeting will be a chance to meet the chaperones and to hear from Barry Slotnick of Educational Tours, Inc. Mr. Slotnick will update us on the support Educational Tours provides for our eighth-grade students, the airline arrangements, hotel accommodations, and the touring plans we are arranging.

The meeting also is a chance for parents, guardians, and students to ask questions and gain more information in preparation for what we know will be a very positive and memorable class experience.

The permission form, emergency contact information sheet, medical information sheet, student contract, packing list, and itinerary for this year’s Washington, DC trip will be available online. Please watch your e-mail for more information.

Seventh-grade Camp—Pretty Lake

The seventh grade class trip to the Adventure Centre in Mattawan, MI is fast approaching. The class will spend May 13–16 participating in a variety of outdoor adventure education activities designed to strengthen leadership skills, develop self-awareness, and confidence through teamwork.

Download the necessary trip forms online. Three forms that will need to be returned to your student's advisor by May 2, 2008: the Adventure Center Student Medical Form (two pages), the Student Contract Sheet, and the Parent Permission Form (three pages). A packing list for the trip is also included.

If you have any questions or concerns about the trip, please contact your student's advisor or Allison Jones. We are looking forward to an exciting four days.

World Language Day Highlights

This year's language day was a tremendous success. Thank you for your support of the various activities. The German classes posted their songs on iTunes. Frau Steinbarth’s class came in a few days before break to sing no less than 13 different songs in German that they had just learned the week before. Please visit the World Languages website to find the link to these songs and much more.

Students have already registered for these tests, which are written and administered by the College Board but taken at U-High. Tests are offered in almost every discipline and are comprehensive. A complete testing schedule, including times is online.

Lab founder, John Dewey, Subject of Dissertations and Presentation

Both Catie Bell, teacher on special assignment, and Joe Kallo, webmaster, have completed dissertations on John Dewey and his work. And as featured speakers, they brought their knowledge to bear at a recent Parents' Association meeting. Read highlights from their talk on Dewey and his theories.

New Textbook Service Online

The Laboratory Schools is happy to announce two new partnerships. MBS Direct, a leading online textbook supplier, and CLÖZ, a well-respected online company offering PE uniforms and spirit wear, will manage and deliver these aspects of our students' needs starting school year 2008–09. Both sites will be available to our community July 1. MBS Direct, along with members of our Parents' Association, will handle our textbook buyback this June. Look for upcoming information regarding the process. For a more in depth information concerning these two companies, please visit our website.
