From the Principals: In the Spring

Nursery, Kindergarten and Lower School teachers have begun to review the Code of Conduct that is published in the handbook (pages 33 and 34) that parents received at the beginning of the school year. This document provides teachers, students, and parents with guidelines about the kinds of behaviors that make it possible for children and adults to work together safely and harmoniously in an environment that is conducive to learning.

Final Lobby Sing of the Year

Come join students, teachers, and families Thursday, April 24 at 8 a.m. in Blaine Lobby at our last lobby sing of this school year. Lobby sing is a wonderful tradition celebrating the "joyful noise" our children bring to Lab.

Global Reading Challenge

Fourth graders recently competed in the Global Reading Challenge (GRC), which promotes the joy of reading and the understanding of various cultures within this country and around the world. Teams of our fourth-grade students share in the reading of ten titles. The books are chosen by children's librarians from the founding GRC program. Each student becomes an "expert" on at least two or three of the books. The teams compete in a series of spirited quiz bowls, answering questions about characters, plots and settings.

See a complete list of this year's GRC selections.

Eighth Grade Trip to Washington, DC

To learn more about our trip and our relationship with Educational Tours, parents are invited to join their child for a meeting on Friday, May 9, at 8:15 a.m. in the Max Palevsky Theater in Ida Noyes. The meeting will be a chance to meet the chaperones and to hear from Barry Slotnick of Educational Tours, Inc. Mr. Slotnick will update us on the support Educational Tours provides for our eighth grade group--the airline arrangements, hotel accommodations, and the touring plans.

The meeting also is a chance for parents, guardians, and students to ask questions and gain more information in preparation for what we know will be a very positive and memorable class experience. We will soon have the permission form, emergency contact information sheet, medical information sheet, student contract, packing list, and itinerary for the upcoming trip available online. Please watch your e-mail for more information.

Change in Middle School Office Staff

As many of you know, the long time Assistant to the Principal Grace Morgan will be away from school for the remainder of the school year. If you have announcements or questions for the front office, please call 773-702-9447 or e-mail. We will have the daily bulletin back online shortly.

Spring Musical, Back to the 80’s

The Middle School spring musical, Back to the 80’s, will be performed on Friday and Saturday nights, April 25 and 26, at 8 p.m., and on Sunday, April 27, at 2 p.m., in Blaine 214. Tickets go on sale in the cafeteria during Middle School lunch period beginning Thursday, April 17. To be as fair as possible, individual students may purchase only two tickets at a time. Payment may be made by cash or a check payable to The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. Tickets are $5.00.

Eighth Grade Concert Date Change—Now April 29

The eighth grade spring concert, originally scheduled for April 24, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 29. Starting time and location remain the same, 7:30 p.m. at Mandel Hall. This change facilitates rescheduling guest speaker, author Daniel Pink, whose original visit was cancelled due to weather. The new scheduling allows families to attend both events. We apologize for any inconvenience. Contact Allison Jones or Brad Brickner with questions.

Grade Level Transition Meetings

Transition meetings help students and their families get a sense of what their child will experience the following year, to outline the differences between the grade the students are currently in and the grade they will be in, and to give families an opportunity to hear from some of the faculty members, the dean of students, the counselor for the grade level, and our learning consultant. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Grade 5 to 6: May 14, 8:30–9:30 a.m., Judd 126
Grade 7 to 8: April 25, 8:15–10:15 a.m., Judd 126

Change in Illinois Physical Exam Form, 5th & 6th Grades

The State of Illinois has changed the grade in which parents submit a required physical exam and immunization form. Starting next school year, the form will be required of children entering sixth grade; previously it was required for rising fifth graders.

If your child will be a sixth grader next fall and you sent us a school physical form for the 2007–08 school year, you will not be required to submit another form this fall. If we need an immunization update, we will notify you by mail.

If you have any questions, contact the school nurse.
