World Language Preference Forms Due Monday, March 17
Parents of second graders should have received World Language preference forms for next year. Please return these forms with your first and second choice for your child's third grade language study to the Lower School office, Blaine 103, by Monday, March

Transition Meeting for Parents of 4th Graders
There will be a transition meeting for parents of fourth graders going into fifth grade on Wednesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in Judd 126. Middle School faculty and principals will describe the fifth grade program and answer any questions you might have. Please note the change in date from May 21.

Charlotte's Web Books for Namibia
Middle School counselor Michel Lacocque has a relative teaching English at a school in Namibia that has very few books. Mr. Lacocque is challenging his advisees to donate copies of Charlotte's Web to help the students there. If you have a spare copy of this beloved story please bring it to Ms. Schmidt or any fifth grade homeroom. Twenty copies are all that are needed.
Eighth Grade History Fair
On Monday, March17, we will have a History Fair at school in Rowley Library from 6-7:30 p.m. Students will share their research in person. It will be an intriguing evening with student topics ranging from crime to “fast food” at the turn of the century. For more information please contact Ms. Yourist.

Course Requests
Students in grades 8–11 recently completed course requests for the next school year. Parents will receive the requests in the mail with the second quarter grade reports. A reminder that these are requests and that a student’s actual schedule may be different as a result of what times classes are scheduled.
End of Second Quarter
The second quarter will end on Tuesday, March 18. Grades will be mailed home the week of March 24. If you do not receive the grades by the end of March, please contact the High School office at 773-702-9446.
BSA and JSA Book Drive
The Black Student and Jewish Student Associations are having their annual book drive for new or gently used books for a library in Zambia being built by a U-High graduate. Donation boxes are in UH105 and the High School lobby. Books will be collected until March 18.
Model UN Team to Nationals
The Model UN team will head off to the Nationals in New York City from Wednesday, March 12 to Saturday, March 15. This competition will bring together some of the most formidable Model UN teams in the country. Good luck to the U-High team!
USA Biology Olympiad Semi-Finalists
Congratulations to Maria Birukova, Aleks Penev, Jarus Singh, David Xu, and Katherine Zhou, who move on to the semifinals in the USA Biology Olympiad Open Exam. The four students scored 29 or better on the exam to advance to the next round. Stay tuned.

Kindness, Bullying, and Everything in Between: Creating a Safe, Successful Academic Environment at Lab
Come to the March 10 Parents' Association meeting at 7 p.m. in Judd 126, to discuss and hear speakers address teaching our kids to be empathetic, cooperative community members. Studies show that an emotionally as well as physically safe school environment directly affects student achievement.
Speaking will be long-time fifth-grade teacher Bob Kass, who is well known for addressing these issues, and Laura Thompson, social worker at Hyde Park Day School, which incorporates a rigorous, daily focus on this issue at all grade levels.
Summer Sizzle: Summer School
Summer Sizzle: Summer School is the summer program where love of learning meets summer fun. With nearly 50 classes from math to science to art, students of all ages and interests are welcome. Favorites from years gone by will return, and several new and exciting offerings will join in. All from the imaginations of the Laboratory Schools’ distinguished faculty. Registration is underway.
Seeking Volunteers for Research Study about Identity Formation
A University of Chicago graduate student in the Social Sciences Division is conducting a study that will look at the role parents play in the identity formation of their biracial children. This graduate student is seeking parents' permission to interview biracial children whom the parents identify as African American and Caucasian.
