From the Principals: In the SpringBeverly Biggs, Lower School principal Carla Young, Nursery/Kindergarten principal The spring quarter is that wonderful time of year when much of the work that has been going on in our classrooms comes to fruition. One example is a mapping project that has taken place in third-grade classrooms. While learning to represent spaces on a map (complete with a legend, scale, a compass rose) has been part of the Lower School curriculum for many years, this part of our curriculum took on an added dimension after classes visited the mapping exhibit at the Field Museum. Throughout the fall and winter quarters, third-grade students have created maps of all sorts, of both real and imaginary places. Some of the places were small (as in rooms of a house) others were of whole countries. Eventually, of course, they went global, and students have learned to draw maps of the world—sometimes even from memory. Starting April 7, this amazing array of maps will be on display on the first floor of Blaine Hall. We invite you to spend some time in our first-floor lobby and corridor viewing this body of work.
