Words From the N/K and Lower School Principals

Beverly Biggs, Lower School principal

Carla Young, Nursery/Kindergarten principal

Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year! There is little that holds more promise, more hope, and more excitement than this new beginning. We look forward to working with our students and families in creating the caring, collaborative school environment that is so conducive to learning.

The words “community” and “communication” are operative as we move towards this goal. The two obviously share the Latin root communitas, which means “sharing” and “fellowship”. It is difficult to have the first without the latter. Our goal of creating a school community is vital to the work we do, From the first day of school (and often before) teachers work with students to create an inclusive classroom environment where everyone is valued and respected – a place where everybody knows your name.

In his book, Choosing Civility, Professor P.M. Forni writes, “One of our strongest yearnings is to be accepted by others. We love being welcomed by individuals, and we delight in the feeling of belonging to a group. Part of our identity is shaped by and within groups; within our groups we find shelter, meaning and direction.”

It is good communication in myriad forms that makes sharing and fellowship possible. Email is certainly convenient and we suggest its use when information needs to be shared quickly and with several parties. We encourage you to talk directly with teachers, counselors and the principals when you have questions or concerns.

Please keep in touch.
